You use SnapInsta to download an Instagram photo, Reel, or video, but it isn't showing up in your Photos app. Before downloading it again, check the Files app.

On iPhone, a file downloaded from a website does not always go directly to Photos. In many cases, Safari or Chrome saves it to a Downloads folder first.

Here is how to find it and move it to Photos if you want.

Check the Downloads Folder First

If you used Safari to download an Instagram file, start with the Files app.

  1. Open Files on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Browse at the bottom.
  3. Look under Locations.
  4. Tap iCloud Drive.
  5. Open the Downloads folder.

Look for the video or image you just downloaded.

Depending on your iPhone settings, the file may instead be stored under:

Files → Browse → On My iPhone → Downloads

If you don't see it in iCloud Drive, check this folder as well.

How to Move a Downloaded Video to Photos

Finding the video in Files is only half the job. If you want it to appear alongside your normal camera photos and videos, you need to save it to Photos.

Open the downloaded video in Files, then:

  1. Tap the Share button.
  2. Choose Save Video.
  3. Open the Photos app.
  4. Check your recent photos and videos.

The same idea works for supported image files. Open the image, tap Share, and choose Save Image if that option is available.

After this, the file is stored in Photos rather than only in the Files app.

What If You Used Chrome Instead of Safari?

If you downloaded the Instagram content with Chrome, you can check Chrome's download list first.

Open Chrome and tap the three-dot menu. Look for Downloads.

From there, you can open the downloaded file and see where it is stored.

If you cannot find the file immediately, also check the Files app and its Downloads folders. The exact location can depend on how the browser and iPhone are configured.

Change Where Safari Saves Downloads

If you frequently download files on your iPhone, changing the Safari download location can make things easier.

Go to:

Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads

Depending on your iOS version, you can choose where downloaded files are stored, such as iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.

If you prefer keeping downloads on the device, choosing an On My iPhone location can make them easier to find without searching through iCloud folders.

Keep in mind that downloaded files still do not automatically become part of your Photos library just because you changed this setting.

I Downloaded the File, but I Can't Find It

If the Downloads folder is empty, check these things before trying again.

Check the Download List

In Safari, tap the download button near the address bar when it is available. This can show recent downloads and help confirm whether the file actually finished downloading.

If the download is still in progress or failed, there may not be a complete file in your Downloads folder.

Search in Files

Open Files and use the search field.

Try searching for:

  • .mp4 for videos
  • .jpg or .jpeg for images
  • .png for PNG images

You can also search for part of the file name if you know it.

Check Recently Deleted

If you saw the file earlier and accidentally removed it, open:

Files → Browse → Recently Deleted

Files that were deleted recently may still be there.

Check Your iPhone Storage

A download can fail if there isn't enough free storage.

Go to:

Settings → General → iPhone Storage

If your storage is almost full, remove some large files or unused apps and try the download again.

Why Didn't My Instagram Download Go Straight to Photos?

This is one of the most confusing parts for iPhone users.

The Files app and Photos app are different storage locations.

A website can provide you with a downloadable image or video file, but your browser generally treats it as a downloaded file. It does not automatically decide that the file should become part of your Photos library.

That's why this can happen:

Instagram → download website → browser → Files → Downloads

instead of:

Instagram → Photos

If you want the file in Photos, open it from Files and use Save Image or Save Video.

If there is no such option, the file format may not be supported by Photos in the way you expect. You can keep the original file in Files instead.
